BENEFICIARIES

Beneficiaries and Selection Process

  • We put up public advertisement through posters, radio and social media inviting eligible girls to submit applications which are then screened by members of the Girls Steering Committee (GSC) – these are former beneficiaries of NIGEE. Successful girls are then interviewed by the GSC members and home visits made to confirm their stories.

The Selection Process

Key eligibility assessed:

  •  Public advertisement through posters, radio and social media then girls submits applications which are reviewed and screened by the members of the Girls Steering Committee. The successful girls are then interviewed by the GSC members and vulnerability follow-up visits are done at their homes.
  • Resident of any of the 4 counties: Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu and Siaya.
  • Using a Case History Tool, we identify genuinely vulnerable girls by looking at: when dropped out of school, reasons for dropping out (our focus is – teen pregnancy, early marriage or female genital mutilation), whether parents are alive, living environment, willingness to enroll back in school, (in)ability of relatives to pay fees, and for those with children, having someone to take care of the child(ren)
  • Special Cases: In extremely special circumstances, we take girls under 18 years with a history of sexual abuse and an environment where the abuse is likely to continue if they are not rescued; such girls are taken to boarding schools and we look for alternative living arrangements during school holidays. We also have two rescue facilities where we host some of the victims of abuse.
